Part 2: Rachungkaru - Gyamalbama - Gyamalhoma - ABC

5/7 - 7/7 2017

5/7: After one night in Rachungkaru (4930m) we climb towards the pass
Kyamayru La, 5430m. My stomach is still in some disorder. For that reason we
decide to use one of our spare days to shorten the task of the day. So we only
climb one pass and make camp in the next valley.
And here come the horses! Our helpers always need some time to pack everything up, after we have started walking. But they are fast, while I am not really fit yet. So they pass us eventually. Rachungkaru can be seen down in the valley to the right.

The cairn of Kyamayuru La, 5430m. Far away, to the right, is the lake Tso Kar.
I take a brake a while after the pass. The next green valley opens up ahead. Here is a look to the southeast. Our main target, The 6000-er Yalung Nong is in the middle of the picture with its characteristic glacier on the north slope.  It's the northern peak we see here, the south peak can be glimpsed behind, a little to the right. Further to the right and closer is tomorrows target, Kostse Ri 5610m.

This is a look to the southwest from the same place. Parts of Gyama Peaks rise at the far end of the valley. Generally, all these peaks rise above 6000m. It's an increadibly grand, beautiful and arid landscape we see now. Extremely clear air and intense colors. During all this day, as well as yesterday, we met no one except from our own group. One of many water crossings. The water is cold and you can cut yourself on sharp stones. For this reason we bought plastic sandales, to wear on the passages. The only problem is that I forgot mine at home... What to do? Well, one crosses the water and then throws the sandals back to the other one! Just find the sollution to the problem.

At the next campsite, Gyamalbama on 5250m altitude. The "smooth giant" Yalung Nong is in the background. This is the first night that I can feel the high altitude and get some sleeping problems.
6/7: It's early morning, we have packed our tents and are going for the next pass. As usual, the weather seemes a bit questionable, but it has always improved during the day, so we expect that to happen today as well.

The pass Kostse La at 5400m. Behind we can see Spangnak Ri, 6380m.  I need about 1h to climb the 200 altitude meters from the pass to the summit of Kostse Ri, 5610m. The air is very thin now and I'm still not entirely well. But it's beautiful up here!

Parts of Gyama Peaks in the background. Mentok Range far to the south. We will pass it towards the end of our trek.

Descending towards the next camp site, Gyamalhoma at 5150m. It's a little to the right down in the valley. Two thirds of our exellent team, Punchok (helper) and Konchok (cook). Konchok manages to serve us entirely new dishes every day, always quite delicious! Furthermore, on his advice we move the next day, a resting day, a short bit upwards to 5300m. Here is enough grass for the horses and a perfect starting point towards Yalung Nongs south peak, the highest and best of the two. This will be our ABC, advanced bacecamp.
