2/7:
After a minor setback with rain and a bad stomach,
our acclimatization
hasn't turned out as we had hoped. Therefore we now take a
taxi cab
from Leh (3500m)
to Rumtse (4180m) to spend one night there. We live in
a homestay, in the white house in this picture. |
3/7:
After breakfast in Rumtse, we are collected by the
jeep of
Gesar
Travels. From now on, they are responsible
for our jurney. The road
leads towards the lake Tso Kar,
over the road pass Taglang La,
claiming to be the worlds second highest with its 5328m. Here is even
oxygen tubes avaliable, for passengers who might get acute mountain
sickness.
|
Arriving
at
Tso Kar, meaning "white lake". This is a saltwaterlake
at 4530m
altitude, surrounded by beautiful mountains, many
over 6000m.
|
|
|
|
Here we
can see our first Kiang, a pretty common
wildhorse in this region.
|
At
Nuruchang (4650m) just south of Tso Kar. This is the starting point of
our trek. Since we now will move through a total wasteland, we must
have help. Carrying all equipment needed isn't reasonable for a normal
human. We have 6 horses, one horseman, one cook and one helper to our
disposal. |
100
altitude meters above Nurchang there is a viewpoint at 4750m, with a
lovely view towards Tso Kar. A good place to spend the evening... Our
trek hasn't even started yet, but already we are super content!

4/7:
The trek has started! We have left Nuruchang and
walk in a
flack
climb towards the first pass, Horlam Konka
La, 4965m. You can see it to
the left in this picture. It's reached in 2h from Nuruchang.
The smooth
snowfree
summit to the right of the pass is Horlam Konka Ri,
5215m. We
want to climb that one for the good views,
as well as for further
acklimatizing. |
Dante
has left the track towards the pass and climbs
towards the peak Horlam
Konka Ri. The horses are
moving towards the pass, far behind. |
The
pass Horlam Konka La, 4965m. Tso Kar barely visible in the background.
|
|
|
|
Looking
to the north, towards Tso Kar from the summit. |
And
here is a view from the summit, 5215m. In the valley is our further
route to
Rachungkaru, the next camping site. It's the green area just to the
left of the top of the left cairn. We will need onother 2,5h
from
here, to get there. |
