Forc. de Crespeina 2558m, Italy 6/4 2015

Deep inside the Italian Dolomites, east of Val Gardena is Passo Gardena (Grödner Joch) 2121m. Here's the pass visible just before reaching it. Our initial route up is the snowey slope to the right in this picture. (larger picture)

A look to the south from the pass. (larger picture)

Sassolungo (Langkofel) 3181m, to the soutwest. (larger picture)

It doesn't take many minutes to reach  Jimmys Hütte, some 100 altitude meters above the pass. (larger picture)

After Jimmys Hütte it gets steeper, but still no problems to climb with snowshues. The problems are to come later, but we don't know that yet. (larger picture)

Dante is wearing proper clothes for the weather we have, it's cold. (larger picture)

The landscape is stunningly beutiful in all directions. Here is a look to the east from more than 2400m. (larger picture)

After a couple of difficult passages, here's the next one. We must descend this steep slope to reach the final climb towards the pass, Forc. de Crespeina 2558m. (larger picture)

At the pass. The climb is made from the left in this picture. It's steep and difficult to handle with snowshoes. (larger picture)

Our initial target is Col Toronn 2655m, but at 2600m we must turn back. We tried to follow the ridge from the pass and that was not the optimal route. We should have cimbed the steep slope to the right side instead. That would have been difficult but possible. But we are physicaly and mentally tired now, with a long and difficult way back. Here is a look back towards the pass. (larger picture)
