Gran Sometta 3166m, 22/7 2014

In the valley up to Monte Rosa, a short bit before Cervinia, you reach the village of Valtournenche. (larger picture)

From Valtournenche there is a cablecar reaching 2320m. (larger picture)

The route is quite easy to begin with, with a steady climb. (larger picture)

At 2700m Cimes Blanches comes in view. (larger picture)

The final climb, after passing the pass Col Sud des Cimes Blanches 2896m, gets a bit steeper. At some places the hands are needed. (larger picture)

Now higher than 3000m. In the background is Petit- and Grand Tournalin. (larger picture)

The summit is marked with a white madonna statue. Unfortunately the weather isn't good today, with clouds covering Monte Rosa. But we can see the Breithorn Plateau behind. (larger picture)

However, bad weather also can provide dramatic formations. Here are some cumulus, together with wave- and rotor clouds. (larger picture)

Cervinia far down in the valley. (larger picture)

A look to the southwest. (larger picture)

Straight north, on the way down, towards Monte Rosa. (larger picture)

And then, this pleasant encounter with a marmot. It really doesn't want to be photographed and soon dissapears into a hole, we never get really close. I have cropped the picture. (larger picture)

A finishing brake at the cablecar station, before going down again. (larger picture)
